Get the right diabetes diagnosis

Before proper diabetes insipidus treatment can begin, a series of testing must be given for proper diagnosis. Diabetes insipidus (DI) is sometimes misdiagnosed as diabetes mellitus, the more common from of diabetes. Two effective ones are a urinalysis and a fluid deprivation test.
A urinalysis involves a physical and chemical analysis of urine. A person with DI has less concentrated urine, meaning the salt and waste concentration is low and water is high. A fluid deprivation test will determine if DI was caused by a defect in the production of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH); excessive fluid intake; or a kidney defect.
Delaying diabetes insipidus treatment because of a misdiagnosis is a waste of time and money.
