the forbidden fruit of barbados

Originally named as the “forbidden fruit’of Barbados, grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree grown for its juicy fruit. Its current name alludes to clusters of the fruit on the tree, which appears similar to grapes. Grapefruit comes in many varieties with flavors ranging from highly acidic and somewhat bitter to sweet and tart.  The seedless variety is the best as it often contains greater amount of sugar, calcium, and phosphorus.

grapefruit has developed as a hybrid of the pomelo (Citrus maxima) with the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), though it is closer to the former. Further crosses have produced the tangelo, the minneola, and the sweetie. The sweetie has very small genetic and other differences from pomelo.
